Google has honoured Savitribai Phule with a Google Doodle! One of the greatest women this country produced, she and her husband Jyotirao Phule, braved many a threat and obstacle to improve the lives of low caste communities and women. Providing them access to education and restoring a sense of dignity that had been denied by priestly privilege (conservative Hindus for long believed that education was the exclusive preserve of Brahmins, the highest caste). When they opened their school (the first such institution in the subcontinent) for girls on the 1st of January, 1848, they were challenging centuries of social and gender discrimination. Savitribai Phule was born on the 3rd of January, 1831. Today, people across India (especially those belonging to the lower castes) celebrate her birthday as Teacher’s Day.
